In what promises to be one of many posts about Haru Japanese Restaurant since it’s our favorite sushi place in town and a standby whenever we want to eat out but can’t get excited about any other place, we had Denise’s birthday dinner at Haru.  It’s our favorite because the prices are on par with other sushi shops in Jackson, the fish and other ingredients are just as fresh as others, portions are more generous than most (compare nigiri from Haru to Little Tokyo for instance, and you’ll feel ripped off by Little Tokyo’s skimpy portions), and service is good.  Last but not least the food is delicious!

An aspect that is good for us but not so good for Haru is the fact that the restaurant is almost never packed and you can almost always sit down immediately and get your food within a reasonable time.  I think it’s not as popular as other places in Jackson because it’s tucked out of the way.  It’s on a strip of Ridgewood Road that seems notoriously bad for restaurants.  One particular building has changed signs at least 3 or 4 times since we started noticing it.  For whatever reason it also doesn’t seem to have the social cachet of other places like Little Tokyo and Nagoya maybe in part due to its location.

As an aside, Nagoya is a close 2nd as our favorite sushi in Jackson.  For me personally I think I could go to either as favorite, but Denise prefers Haru so it’s our collective favorite.  I also feel an emotional bond with both Nagoya and Haru since I visited both restaurants since their earliest days.  I almost feel like a proud parent watching Nagoya grow so popular that the owners have opened a 2nd location, and similarly feel sympathy for Haru as they have never quite taken off.  Because of that and the good food I don’t mind not going to Nagoya anymore and exclusively supporting Haru.  They need all the help they can get, and it’s not like I’m doing it out of charity alone.

Definitely give them a visit if you haven’t yet.  Appetizers (try the baked salmon!), sashimi, nigiri, rolls–all of it is really good.  We’ll be back for sure.
