Froghead Grill

We put the finishing touch on a really fun Saturday with some take-out from Froghead Grill.  Froghead is a locally owned restaurant in Clinton that serves a variety of dishes such as appetizers, salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, po-boys, platters, desserts, etc.  Plenty of them too.  I browsed the menu and there must be around 50 or so items on it.  They even serve a surprisingly good fried calamari appetizer–not what I would expect from a place like this.

Denise and I avoided this place like the plague for the longest time because we were turned off by the frog themed kitsch.

See what I mean?  It’s all a bit much.  But get past that and you’ll experience an enjoyable meal.  E-P1 related note: I took my E-P1 to pick up our order and took a picture of the frog stuff inside without anybody giving me dirty looks.  I don’t think I could’ve pulled that off with my 5D.

Denise had The Firebelly sandwich.  It’s “grilled chicken, swiss cheese, ham, roasted red peppers, barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato on a Kaiser bun” (Hey, I see bacon.  Was that a freebie?).  Quite the large sandwich too–Denise only finished half of hers and kept the other half for another meal.

I had their Reuben.  New Yorkers might scoff at this pale imitation of the real thing, but unless you’re going to hand-deliver me a fresh one from New York, just back off :D .  They use marble rye bread, which at least adds an interesting visual touch to it.

Both sandwiches were delicious, and the times we’ve been there they’ve been consistent with the quality of their dishes.  I’ll mention the fried calamari again even though we didn’t get it this time, because we’ve had it a couple times and it’s been perfectly cooked both times–perfectly done, not overcooked and chewy, with a nice light breading.  It’s such a great appetizer and unexpected for this type of restaurant in my opinion.

If you’re coming through Clinton this place is worth a stop if you want a break from your typical McAlister’s, etc.  It’s right off I-20, so you wouldn’t be going out of your way at all if you’re coming down I-20.  And even if you’re not passing through, give it a shot.  You might just make a point of “passing through” all the time because of it.
