It’s not all wine and roses here, folks. Working man’s gotta eat a working man’s lunch sometimes. Behold the magnificence of 2 Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers from Wendy’s. $2 and change. At least there’s lettuce and tomatoes in there.
All things considered, Wendy’s isn’t bad. Their Spicy Chicken Sandwich is easily one of the best fast food sandwiches you can buy. But don’t buy the sandwiches that hover around $1 unless you’re really short on cash or just feel like eating “light”. These cheeseburgers were not the pinnacle of fine dining.
Today my persistent E-P1 itch forced me to call up the local camera shop Deville Camera to see if they had a demo E-P1 I could play with. Whaddya know? They did! So after work I stopped by Deville Camera with a co-worker to see if the Olympus E-P1 is really all that. Thanks to Greg at Deville for letting us check it out.
The main draw of the E-P1 for me is its size. My main camera both for work and play is a Canon 5D, which isn’t the largest camera in the world but isn’t exactly svelte either. There are times when I just don’t want to lug it around, but I invariably wish I had when a photo op comes up that I’m not equipped for. Compact cameras have tiny sensors in them that are ultra-noisy, especially after being used to the clean high ISO of a 5D, so compacts are out of the question. The E-P1 looks on paper to be a great compromise between a big ol’ SLR and a tiny compact, incorporating pros and cons of both.
So how small is the E-P1? » Continue Reading…

Last hug for now
Bye for now, Susie. Your visit was way too short, but we’ll see you in August!

'Sup?
This is the first time Sofia has ever warmed up to a dog. When she was smaller she was afraid of all dogs, big or small. She would say ‘hi’ to them from a distance, but physical contact was definitely off limits. At the beginning of this visit to our friends’ house she still wasn’t too sure about the dogs. She was willing to give it a chance though. » Continue Reading…

Sweaty + pony tails all day = crazy hair

Mom, dad, and Susie.

The first restaurant we went to was a Chinese restaurant in Surabaya right after we landed. On day 2 we went to our first Indonesian food restaurant: Gadjah Mada restaurant in Malang. I call it an Indonesian restaurant because its main dishes are uniquely Indonesian despite their distinctly Chinese roots. Gadjah Mada is known for its Pangsit Mie, which is a noodle dish (mie = noodles) served with dumplings similar to Gyoza (pangsit = a type of dumpling). Despite the name, instead of fried/boiled dumplings you can get it served with a variety of other meats on top of the noodles like shredded or ground meat, meatballs, etc. Beef and chicken are popular toppings, while pork is more likely to be served at Chinese-inclined restaurants where their clientele are less likely to be muslim. » Continue Reading…

Day 2? What happened to day 1? I didn’t take any pictures on day 1–that’s what happened. Yes, from the moment we touched down in Indonesia through the end of day 1 I managed to not take a single shot. I’ll hide behind the excuse that I was tired and just ready to relax, but as a self-proclaimed photographer and one who thought about making a half-decent travelog out of the trip that really isn’t good enough. Do better next time. » Continue Reading…

A slice of deliciousness
Denise baked this peach and blueberry galette before we left for the fireworks show, and it was waiting for us when we got back. A galette is like an open-face pie with a light, flaky crust. Denise says it’s super-easy to make, which makes its tastiness-to-effort ratio off the charts. I believe fruit galettes are considered summer desserts, and lo and behold–it is summer! I definitely don’t mind eating this year round though.

The whole galette before we demolished it

Mesmerized
Good thing Susie was in town on the 4th of July. Otherwise I might’ve indulged my lazy tendencies and not taken us to see fireworks, which would’ve made Denise sad since she loves fireworks. And Sofia would miss out too. Hmm… maybe I wouldn’t have sat at home after all with all of that in play. Anyway, we went. Clinton has a fireworks show every 4th of July, so we avoided the $5 parking fee and traffic crush by parking just outside of the park and walked the rest of the way. It was a nice little hike, but we had a good time so it was worth it. » Continue Reading…
