Hurry
I had hosted Nifty for quite some time–too long really by the somewhat loose rules of the Nifty exchange program–so it was time to say ‘goodbye’. The night before I was to pack him up for his trip to his next host, I took him up to the top level of the parking garage next to my office and took some shots, including the last two posts here and here. Jackson doesn’t have much of a skyline, but I showed Nifty the sights anyway. He’s the silent type, so I don’t know what he was thinking, but I think it was a bitter-sweet moment for him too. We’ve had some good times together these past few weeks.
For the better part of a month I confined myself to almost exclusively taking photos with this one lens. The only time I mounted a different lens was when I used my 17-35mm to capture a whole table’s worth of people at a restaurant–the last few shots in this post. Although I still find the real worth of such an exercise as a learning tool for photo novices somewhat dubious (some photographers advocate learning photography with a completely manual camera and a single focal-length lens like the 50mm), it was fun and challenging to confine my photographic vision to a fixed focal length for an extended period of time. If I had shot more I’m sure I would’ve felt this even stronger, but you do get a real sense of what a focal length is all about when it’s the only one you use. It’s a pity I was so busy with work. I really enjoyed my time with Nifty and wish it could’ve been more fruitful.
So here’s to you, Nifty! Hope you continue to enjoy a safe and fun journey all across the world.
