Barbecue and painfully expensive gas

What if I told you a barbecue shop tucked into a gas station convenience store has the best ribs in Jackson?  You’d probably say, “Get outta here!”  to which I would admit to having exaggerated a bit having not sampled anywhere near the number of barbecue joints to have an informed opinion on the matter.  Having said that, I think it’s safe to say that Southern Smokehouse’s ribs would not be embarrassed by other joints’ versions in a head-to-head challenge.  In other words, these are great ribs.

Lumpkins BBQ

About a month before Penelope was born, Denise, Sofia, and I went to Lumpkin’s BBQ for lunch.  I met the Lumpkin’s folks at Taste of Mississippi the previous month while photographing that event, and after sampling their barbecue brisket there I was eager to visit their restaurant.  The title of this post gives away the verdict so let’s not beat around the bush: this is the best barbecue restaurant in Jackson.  More on that later on.

Delicious ribs

We interrupt the D.C. travelogue for this breaking news story: barbecue pork ribs are delicious.  I repeat: barbecue pork ribs are delicious.

With the economy being what it is and since we had a couple slabs of pork ribs in the deep freeze, I decided it was as  good a time as any to barbecue some ribs.  We already had the meat so we didn’t have to spend money on that, and the results go a long way if you don’t pig out (heh) on the ribs. » Continue Reading…
